The Global Water Initiative (GWI) was an action-research and advocacy programme that ran from 2008-17. The project is now closed. This site is no longer being updated, but allows access to GWI outputs until 1 October 2020 when it will also close. After that date, information about the project and core GWI technical publications will continue to be available from the IIED website and Publications Library.
Community Based Actions in the Black Volta Basin, Ghana
Indigenous knowledge and community-based actions are crucial to successful water resource management. In fact, informal community-based management of water has long existed in rural communities, and the more official recognition it receives the better it is for everyone (empowering local people and improving efficiency at local level). This MSc thesis describes how the inhabitants of the Black Volta basin can progress through the Community Participation Framework, allowing a steady and structured move towards full self-management.
