Development of the profile and system of agricultural advisers and advisory services around the Bagré dam
The Global Water Initiative (GWI), in partnership with Bagrépôle and the Union des groupements de producteurs de riz de Bagré (UGPRB), carried out a diagnostic study on the livelihoods of smallholders in 2013. This study found that the service and quality of agricultural advice around the Bagré dam, in Burkina Faso, was neither effective nor adapted to the needs of farmers.
This observation, which was shared by all stakeholders, led to a proposal for an action plan based on four results, including the revision and implementation of the Bagrépôle agricultural advisory manual.
Among the priority actions needed to achieve this result, a process was launched in January 2017 to define the profile of Bagrépôle's agricultural advice and agricultural advisors. This report is the outcome of that process. It presents insights and suggests strategy elements to inform the discussions in the context of the elaboration of Bagrépôle's agricultural advisory system. Its structure reflects that of the results pursued and is structured around three main aspects, namely: (i) the context around the Bagré dam; (ii) the profile of the agricultural advice and advisers; (iii) the implementation mechanism of the agricultural advice; and (iv) a conclusion followed by recommendations.
